Audit of a Smart Safety Platform

In this business case, our customer was a KSA-based business conglomerate with a diverse portfolio spanning the packaging, education, and industrial sectors. Operating since the early 1980s, they have gradually expanded their presence to more than 15 countries.

Business Context

As a large and multifaceted company managing a diverse workforce across multiple sectors and environments, the customer increasingly relies on digital solutions to safeguard their assets, employees, and operations. To achieve this, they developed their own intelligent safety platform – a sophisticated solution for systematic hazard identification, risk management, compliance tracking, and operational monitoring. Events can be collected from external monitoring systems, which are part of the ecosystem, or created manually during inspections. When an event occurs, users receive real-time notifications and can take immediate action, including identifying the necessary resources and planning for risk mitigation and recovery.

Challenges

Currently, the platform is used not only within the customer's organization but also as Software as a Service, being used by seven clients in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, primarily in the manufacturing sector. There are plans for further expansion. Scalability across different industries and regions is supported by the solution's flexibility and customizability.

As system load and automation demands grow, integrating the safety platform with other systems – for example, ERPs, HR management software, access control and incident management tools, and data analytics – can significantly enhance its value proposition. This integration will enable comprehensive data sharing, streamlined workflows, and enhanced decision-making, ultimately leading to a more robust security framework and improved organizational resilience.

Project overview

The customer chose our company due to our proven expertise in IT infrastructure audits. Andersen was entrusted with the following objectives:

  • Evaluating the architecture, infrastructure, codebase, and tech stack for adherence to best practices, as well as assessing their scalability and integration potential;
  • Identifying and documenting current issues, their impact on the system, and the possible negative consequences;
  • Recommending improvements to architecture, infrastructure, and workflows, along with collaboration tools, to address weaknesses and support the product's technical growth.

Solution

The core idea was to conduct three exhaustive, end-to-end audits: an architecture audit, an IT infrastructure audit, and a codebase audit of the platform. This approach ensured a deep and thorough assessment, enabling us to pinpoint critical weaknesses and provide actionable recommendations for improvement.

Another key focus was to foster close and productive collaboration with the customer. To achieve this, our team actively engaged with stakeholders, conducted interactive workshops, and maintained transparent communication throughout the process.

This combination of in-depth technical analysis and close collaboration allowed us to not only diagnose existing issues but also align the proposed solutions with business objectives, ensuring long-term scalability and efficiency.

Project results

The architecture audit, IT infrastructure audit, and codebase audit of the platform revealed a total of 191 issues. They all were meticulously categorized by severity to ensure a clear understanding of their impact. Among them:

  • 69 were classified as high severity, requiring immediate attention to prevent substantial business or operational disruptions;
  • Another 69 were identified as medium severity, highlighting risks that, while not immediately critical, could escalate if left unaddressed;
  • Lastly, 53 low-severity issues were noted, representing minor concerns that, although less urgent, still affected the overall stability and efficiency of the platform.

These findings provide a comprehensive foundation for strategic improvements, ensuring the platform's long-term resilience, scalability, and adherence to best practices.
